Interview with Andy Picci
How has working with artificial intelligence transformed your creative process, especially in the context of reinterpreting B&B Italia's iconic designs?
The implementation of artificial intelligence in my creative process has allowed me to explore new possibilities, expanding the scope of my creations. Specifically, it has enabled me to merge different elements of my creations (like some landscape photos from my past travels and a 3D sculpted reinterpretation of the Grande Papilio designed specifically for this project) and combine them with a personal atmosphere and a color palette that I developed over time.
How have you infused your personal artistic signature into AI-generated works, ensuring that each piece remains unique and reflective of your vision?
I usually start with a photograph I've taken. Sometimes for the composition, sometimes for the lights or the overall aesthetic. This allows me (with the help of AI) to integrate additional elements from sketches, 3D renderings, or other photographs, which will enhance the base layer. It's a very practical tool to ensure consistency in my overall creations.
What have been the most significant challenges and successes in integrating AI technology to reinterpret B&B Italia's designs in innovative ways?
Although playing with AI can be a lot of fun, it's also quite complicated to replicate a specific vision. I'd say most times the AI generations surprise me, but they often can't exactly reproduce my thought. That's why I approach my creation with a multimedia workflow, which allows me to bounce back and forth between research and creation.
How do you use AI to bring dreamy and fantastical elements into the realm of design? Can you share insights on how AI has enabled you to imagine B&B Italia's products in various contexts, atmospheres, and settings beyond traditional environments?
What's interesting in the virtual realm is the absence of context or restrictions. There's no scale, depth, light. It's just emptiness begging to be filled. Thus, it's fascinating to see artists create by playing the reproduction of their inner vision and then implementing known subjects to present them under a very personal perspective.
With your unique use of AI in design, how do you envision the future of living spaces and furniture design? What role will AI play in shaping these future trends?
As you said, AI will offer uniqueness in design. It's a way for everyone to generate according to our will. What if wallpapers or curtains were generated individually for each customer? Or perhaps a sofa, whose shape is created based on someone's preferences? Instead of chasing the model we prefer, the model could be proposed based on what we like, offering a completely new level of personalized and tailor-made experience.
What sources of inspiration do you draw from when using AI to reinterpret B&B Italia's iconic designs, and how do these influences manifest in your work?
As always, inspirations are a mix of countless sources like painting, travel, thoughts... and finally the effect of time on the memory of these influences. The work, here using AI, is to reinterpret them, mix them, blend them, in order to make the artwork relevant in the current context according to my vision.
How does your work with AI and B&B Italia reflect on the cultural and social implications of design today? How do you think design and AI can contribute to a more sustainable future?
This work represents the unbalanced balance between heritage and future. While the former seems rooted, heavy, and impressive, it also serves as a pedestal, foundation, or base for the latter, which can then take time to grow, aiming for the sky. AI is part of that future, a future as ephemeral as all pasts or as the life of a butterfly.
How do you imagine your AI-generated designs inspiring communities to think differently about sustainability, furniture, and interior design?
AI is about surprise. I love the idea that we can rely on it to synthesize our thoughts and respond to concerns we are unable to solve. Sometimes the results will spark bigger ideas, and sometimes they won't make sense... however, once we've tried and produced everything that seemed to make sense, there might be a moment to try something less expected, right?
What role do you see for AI in advancing design education, particularly in fostering a new generation of designers aware of their impact on sustainability and climate change?
Each of us has a particular intelligence. For some, it's visual, for others intuitive or reflective. Working with a team is a great way to sum up multiple ways of thinking, even if it might bring problems for the consistency of vision. Here lies AI, in my opinion; a kind of complementary intelligence, here to enhance our brainstorming of further ideas.
Based on your experience, what advice would you give to artists and designers eager to explore the potential of AI in their creative endeavors?
Don't forget that AI is a tool here to enhance your vision. Use it accordingly, to expand your spectrum of research.
Interview with Yomagick
How has working with artificial intelligence transformed your creative process, especially in the context of reimagining B&B Italia's iconic designs?
I found it to be an intriguing experience as it marked my first venture into utilizing AI for a client-based project. Exploring various concepts rooted in my own experiences was a stimulating process. Being inspired by Patricia Urquiola's work added another layer of excitement to reinterpreting the furniture.
I like the idea of creating mixed work where part of an image is using AI technologies, and parts of it are in 3d. The same thing with animation, it’s interesting to me to create illustrations in AI and then use tools to create characters inside of it by AI tracking tools.
In what ways have you infused your personal artistic signature into AI-generated artworks, ensuring each piece remains unique and reflective of your vision?
Over the years I believe I managed to create my personal style. Inspirations and the images I created and old masters art collected over the years can be used in AI as a reference. So I can extend my style that I was already working on.
What have been the most significant challenges in integrating AI technology to designs in innovative ways?
In general my main challenge with AI lies in moral acceptance. Coming from a 3D background and traditional arts where years of training and personal style development were crucial, the rapid image generation capability of AI feels unsettling.
Moreover, the lack of transparency regarding the data used to train AI raises questions about its long-term impact on craftsmanship. Imagine a scenario in sports where a new technology eliminates the need for years of training, leveling the playing field. Basically a sports commentator is becoming the best star player because he is the one that can talk (write prompt) about it very well. (laugh) While it may benefit some, others may feel their unique skills are devalued.
This dilemma prompts me to contemplate the balance between technological advancement and preserving the essence of craftsmanship. I wonder if artists, committed to creating something new and unique, might feel demotivated knowing that their original idea, once noticed, could be easily replicated. This phenomenon, which previously occurred just between different people and artists, can now be facilitated by algorithms that rapidly scan humanity's favorite and most viral content.
How do you leverage AI to bring dream-like and fantastical elements into the realm of design? Can you share insights into how AI has enabled you to envision B&B Italia's products in various contexts, atmospheres, and environments beyond traditional settings?
I believe the possibilities are boundless. During my travels in Asia, I was captivated by the ancient trees, inspiring me to experiment with incorporating various roots and textures into the armchair design. The symbolism of ancient trees, representing the growth of each generation building upon the past, deeply resonated with me. Imagining the care and nurturing these plants received over hundreds of years sparked my creativity. I kind of see it as society building different structures and products that evolve through the time.
Ultimately, my exploration culminated in crafting a painting-like image, which seamlessly aligns with the style I've honed in 3D design over the years.
With your unique use of AI in design, how do you envision the future of living spaces and furniture design? What role will AI play in shaping these future trends?
I believe AI enables a faster iteration of the creative process, making it more accessible to many. This accessibility will likely lead to a resurgence in interest in experimental design. Consequently, design may become more expressive and innovative.
What sources of inspiration do you draw from when using AI to reinterpret B&B Italia's iconic designs, and how do these influences manifest in your work?
For my final work I tried to kind of replicate my 3d style, just more in painterly style. So I learned how to recreate my own artwork with a computer by doing many experiments, using images that I previously created.
How does your work with AI and B&B Italia reflect on the cultural and societal implications of design today? In what ways do you think design and AI can contribute to a more sustainable future?
In the long run, when AI can predict material waste usage and foster eco-friendly designs, it will be intriguing to witness for example the development of a chair that minimizes waste production while maximizing comfort. Crafting a detailed brief or posing the right questions to AI could catalyze this transformation and spark discussions about shaping our future society. I envision such advancements will prioritize features outlined in the brief.
How do you envision your AI-generated designs inspiring communities to think differently about sustainability, furniture, and interior design?
I think that we're currently at the foundational level of AI development. However, in the future, customers may have greater influence over the final concept of furniture pieces or physical design in general. Picture wearing AR glasses and narrating the vision for your space, instantly witnessing AR designs materialize before you.
This speculative process could significantly streamline creation, reducing resource waste associated with physical prototyping. Such advancements will broaden collective awareness of current societal structures and systems, offering insights into a more abstract understanding of the world we live in.
What role do you see for AI in advancing design education, particularly in fostering a new generation of designers who are conscious of their impact on sustainability and climate change?
I believe AI can be immensely beneficial in that regard. However, I'm uncertain whether the reward system, prevalent in garnering virality on social networks, will generate designs that are attractive from perspectives beyond evoking an emotional reaction. Nonetheless, I anticipate and hope for a significant shift towards accessing specific and direct knowledge and wider interest in actual solutions that benefit societies and ways we live.
Based on your experience, what advice would you give to artists and designers who are eager to explore the potential of AI in their creative endeavors?
I'm still in the learning phase with these tools myself, and I believe I can only encourage others to explore this technology. It prompts us to ponder many unconventional philosophical questions about human creativity, individualism, and the moral aspects of creation. It feels akin to tapping into a collective digital brain of humanity.
