Giorgio Poi in Recanati: When a Concert Finds Its Perfect Place

How important is the place where a concert happens? And how much does it matter for an artist to be perfectly aligned with the venue they are playing?

Because there are concerts that could happen anywhere, and others that seem to need that exact place in order to work even better.

I kept asking myself this last night at Giorgio Poi’s concert in Recanati, in the Marche region.

Giorgio Poi’s summer tour arrived in the small town with the stage set in the Piazzuola del Sabato del Villaggio, right below the historic house of Giacomo Leopardi. A place that already carries words, memory and a very specific kind of melancholy.

A singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer, Giorgio Poi has long been one of the most distinctive and quietly unconventional figures in the Italian scene. After living between London and Berlin, he built a path made of records, international tours and collaborations with artists such as Phoenix, Calcutta, Frah Quintale, Carl Brave and Franco126, becoming known beyond Italy without ever losing that surreal, melancholic and instantly recognizable way of writing.

The Recanati date is part of Les jeux sont faits, the summer tour with which Giorgio Poi is bringing live the songs from his latest album Schegge, released last May via Bomba Dischi, together with the most beloved tracks from his discography. In the setlist, new songs coexist with older favorites such as Vinavil, La musica italiana and I pomeriggi, which, in this version with a string quartet, seem to slightly change shape without losing their identity.

The lyrics of the Roman singer-songwriter could not have found a more fitting frame. Accompanied by a string quartet, Giorgio Poi’s historical tracks became even more moving than they already are. The everyday nature of things, the images carried by words, melancholy, happiness: line after line, Giorgio Poi raised the bar song after song, giving an enormous emotion to the audience, who were attentive and visibly involved.

As someone from the Marche region who has lived away from home for almost twenty years, seeing such intimate and meaningful live shows being organized here fills my heart and makes me fall back in love with my roots. I have seen Giorgio Poi live at different moments in his career and in different formats: with a full band, with just one accompanist, alone with his guitar. But I think seeing him live with voice and guitar, together with a string quartet, was the best combination.

It does not only bring out the most poetic and intimate side of the author; it really feels as if every word comes straight from the heart. Or maybe it was the location that moved Giorgio Poi too.

At a time when artificial intelligence is opening up new possibilities in how we imagine, produce and tell the story of music, a concert like this reminds us of something fundamental: technology truly works when it amplifies a vision, not when it replaces it. In Recanati, the vision was crystal clear: voice, strings, words, stone and memory. Everything was perfectly aligned, as if the place itself had become part of the arrangement.

Maybe this is what I take home from Giorgio Poi’s live show: the idea that some songs, in the right place, can become even sharper. As if they had simply been waiting for the perfect frame in order to be understood more clearly.
