Yoan Putra maximalist graphic and typeface design is bursting with raw energy

Yoan Putra is a freelance graphic designer based in Kota Batu, Indonesia. His maximalist graphic and typeface design is bursting with raw energy.

Graphic design can have a major impact on how we experience the world, and how we absorb information. For Yoan Putra, the goal is to communicate different experiences and fully incorporate typeface design into his work. He is a self-taught graphic designer and we believe that in 2022, you need to cultivate the fundamentals—develop experience, understand how to work with softwares, and be willing to put yourself out there. As long as you’re passionate about design, connecting with people, and ready to put in the time and effort. While you don’t always need a formal education to become a graphic designer, you do need to have a solid understanding of the fundamentals. Read on to hear Yoan Putra’s story, including how he got into design, his favorite projects and his desire to study abroad.

Hello Yoan, welcome into RED•EYE Metazine! How would you introduce yourself?

Hi, I'm Yoan Putra, graphic and Typeface designer based in Kota Batu, Indonesia. My art depends on my feelings or what I've been listening to for the past few weeks. My feelings are constantly changing. You will tend to see different styles from me.

How old were you when you created your first graphic design project?

I think I was around 15 - 17 years old as far as I can remember. Back then when I first started, I was making car livery for my project. I used to build a car on a website called Stunner ( now it is dead ). And the rest is what you see right now :)

Being based in Indonesia, what is your education background in terms of graphic design?

My highest education in terms of graphic design is just high school. If I had a chance to continue my education outside my country it would be a dream.

Tell us more about your inspiration by Fish meat and organic stuff for the Pryozonix project.

The intention behind Pyrozonix project was to follow the success of previous project "Peroxide" and I was just planning to make the Typeface and then uploaded it, but somehow things got little bit out of hands. At the time I really loved and felt comfortable doing that style. Since the theme is organic, living things or plants were the perfect texture for the project and somehow ‘fish meat’ just came to my mind. To be honest I never did meat texture before, so it was an experiment; also I'm really glad that you guys noticed it's inspired by fish meat.

The message behind your experiment ‘Erotic Ghoul’? What softwares did you use for it?

The Erotic Ghoul is just a try to make a character. I enjoy listening to Hard Techno and I think Black and Erotic dress are identic to Hardtechno, so that's the inspiration of Erotic Ghoul. The software I used are fairly common, Blender ,Zbrush , Substance (which is my first time using it) and Adobe after effects for the reels.

What is so exciting behind creating AI illustrations? Do you have a favorite AI artist?

What makes artificial intelligence fun in my opinion is that it can expand our ideas more broadly although sometimes it doesn't meet our expectations, but it's still amazing in my opinion. There is one artist that I really admire and is @oliasvetlanova_.

Any favorite project that you’ve worked on?

The Kawai magazine series, Pyrozonix, 2005 infinity space and especially the "Beamer Boy''. I really love it because I personally love cars and my client car is a representation of my imagination if I had a BMW E36.

A letter to your future self. What would you write?

Socialize more with people outside, make more friends, try to wake up early in the morning everyday, learn about business, always learn something new, try to keep your consistency, do what you love and don't forget to pray.
