What To Expect at FRIEZE Art Fair 2024
October is here and London's art scene is preparing for the highly anticipated return of Frieze London and Frieze Masters 2024. Taking place in Regent’s Park from October 9 to 13, these two premier art fairs promise to bring together over 270 galleries from 47 countries, showcasing an incredible array of contemporary and historical artworks. This year's event is a celebration of global artistic talent, from emerging contemporary voices to the masters who shaped art history.
Frieze London, in its 22nd edition, has undergone a redesign that emphasizes the diversity and interconnectedness of its featured galleries. More than 160 galleries will present works, highlighting a dynamic range of artists, from rising stars to established figures. Notable solo presentations include Gagosian’s display of new large-scale sculptures by Carol Bove, Hauser & Wirth’s debut of Charles Gaines’s latest works, and Danielle Dean’s interactive booth blending antique aesthetics with mid-century design.
An exciting new addition is the Focus section, which has been relocated to the heart of the fair to spotlight emerging galleries. It will feature 34 exhibitors from 21 countries, with standout presentations such as Eva Gold’s cinematic installation exploring voyeurism and Divine Southgate-Smith’s sculptures and collages inspired by Black queer experiences.
The Artist-to-Artist initiative returns for its second year, pairing renowned artists with emerging talents. This year, Glenn Ligon has nominated Appau Junior Boakye-Yiadom, who will showcase an installation centered around a drum kit, while Rashid Johnson has selected Rob Davis, whose oil paintings reflect American domestic interiors of the 1970s and ’80s.
Frieze Masters, now in its 12th edition, will offer visitors an unparalleled journey through millennia of art history, featuring over 130 galleries. Highlights include a rare racecourse painting by Édouard Manet at Hauser & Wirth and Waddington Custot’s reappraisal of Parisian Nabis painters, featuring works by Pierre Bonnard, Maurice Denis, and Félix Vallotton. In addition to these impressive displays, Frieze Masters Talks will delve into "The Creative Mind," featuring a range of artists, institutional leaders, and political figures who will explore the intersections of creativity, history, and culture.
Frieze London and Frieze Masters 2024 promise to be a dynamic meeting point for art lovers and collectors, offering a comprehensive survey of artistic innovation across time and space. With its blend of emerging talent and historic masterpieces, it’s set to be one of the most exciting art events of the year.
